Starting out in college can be overwhelming. Who knows what career options are out there? Here are some job opportunities available to you as a college student in the Kansas City area.

Step 1. Ask yourself: What kinds of opportunities exist for me?

There are many factors to consider. You should consider your education and career goals. You can also look for opportunities to apply your knowledge and skill by asking the offices that contact you to create internship opportunities for you.

You may not be interested in an internship. But looking for opportunities for students to learn new things is another way to research career opportunities.

Step 2. Search online for college and district openings in your area.

Finding a current job opening at a college or district office is the easiest way to get started. Many college and district offices post current openings on job boards or on their websites.

Locating the company where the job posting is listed.

Using information from other job postings to verify that the potential company is suitable. Reading the qualifications required for the job or defining job responsibilities. Checking the company’s reputation and identifying factors that may have caused customer dissatisfaction.

Working with the department manager to determine what can be done to improve company conditions. Whether you are attending College, College Transition Program, or University, there is a job out there for you.

Finding a suitable job in your desired field can help you stand out in a sea of talent, so keep an eye out. Job hunters often make a few common mistakes.

What are some things to avoid when applying?

Due to the competitive nature of the work force, you should try to choose a company that does not require you to use a resume. Check with your Human Resources representative at the college.

Time commitments. Before you accept an offer, see if there is an agreed upon time that you would like to be at the job. Compensation. Make sure that you are being compensated adequately. Your salary and benefits should be comparable to what you are paid in your current occupation.

Other duties of the job. Avoid new job duties such as “job shadowing” and “cleaning out trash cans.” Make sure you have clear job descriptions so that you know what you are expected to do.

Working Conditions. It is important that the job you are interested in does not have subpar working conditions.

Tips for your application materials 

After applying online, use your cover letter, resume and/or any other materials you have to illustrate the key responsibilities and qualifications that you have for the job. In addition, you may wish to include specific skills that you have used in a past position. For example, it would be great to provide examples of projects that you were involved in at previous jobs.
